🔥 The Ultimate Candle Care Guide: Burn Longer, Brighter, and Cleaner
If you love candles (and we’re guessing you do), learning a bit about candle care is the easiest way to get more burn time, more fragrance, and more joy out of every light.
Whether you’re using votives, jars, pillars, or sculptural pieces like our Adam and Eve set, this guide will walk you through essential candle care tips that help your candles burn clean, look beautiful, and last longer.
✂️ Wick Trimming: Your First Candle Care Step
Before every burn, trim your wick to 5mm (¼ inch). This helps avoid:
Sooty black marks on glass
Large, flickering flames
Uneven melting and tunneling
Wick trimming is one of the most underrated steps in candle care — but it makes a huge difference in both safety and scent performance. Our Candle Care Kit includes a wick trimmer, snuffer, and dipper to make this process super simple.
🔥 The First Burn Sets the Memory
The first time you light a candle, let it burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the surface. If you blow it out too early, you’ll create a memory ring, and the candle will continue to tunnel every time after.
This is especially important for larger candles like our 200ml and 400ml container candles or our XL 1.3kg pillar styles.
Candle Care Tip: Always burn your candle until a full melt pool forms — usually 2 to 4 hours depending on the size.
⏳ Why Only Burn for 3 Hours at a Time?
One of the most common candle care questions we get is: Why can’t I burn my candle longer than 3 hours?
Here’s why we recommend a 3-hour max per session:
After 3 hours, the flame can overheat the wax and burn off fragrance oils too quickly.
The jar (especially glass containers) can become dangerously hot.
The wick may shift or mushroom, leading to smoke and soot.
Pillar Candles don't have a container to hold them up and after 3 hours may become structurally soft and collapse
Let your candle rest between burns, and you'll get a much more even, fragrant experience.
🕯️ Always Use a Candle Plate or Holder
Never burn a candle directly on your table or countertop — especially with pillar or sculptural candles. Always place candles on a heatproof, flame-resistant surface like our ceramic or wrought iron candle plates and holders.
This protects your surfaces and prevents wax drips from damaging furniture.
💨 Snuff or Dip — Don’t Blow
Blowing out a candle might feel natural, but it creates smoke and can splash hot wax. Instead, use a candle snuffer or wick dipper.
A snuffer gently covers the flame and extinguishes it with minimal smoke.
A dipper bends the wick into the melted wax, extinguishes the flame, and re-coats the wick for next time.
Both tools are included in our Candle Care Kit — designed to make caring for your candle easy and mess-free.
🧼 Clean Candles = Classy Candles
After each burn:
Let the wax cool completely before moving your candle
Wipe any soot off the jar with a soft cloth
Re-trim the wick before your next light
Clean candles look better, smell stronger, and stay safer — the holy trinity of good candle care.
💡 Why Candle Quality Matters in Candle Care
You can do everything right, but if your candle is made with low-quality materials, you’ll still run into problems. That's why we use a premium soy and palm wax blend, lead-free wicks, and natural Australian ingredients in every candle we pour.
High-quality candles:
Burn longer
Throw fragrance better
Leave less soot and residue
